A MAN, A WOMAN, AND A CAT: STAGES IN A RELATIONSHIP
At the beginning of a relationship...
- Woman: Darling, I'd like you to meet my cat.
- Man: (under his breath: Ugh. I hate cats.) Uh, hi. Nice kitty.
As the relationship progresses...
- Woman: Dear, I get the impression that you don't like my cat.
- Man: That's ridiculous. I love Poopsie. (under his breath: This
cat is ruining our relationship.)
As the relationship reaches a more stable level...
- Woman: Oh, Poopsie looks just so cute sitting there on your lap.
- Man: (Darn thing's shedding all over my new suit.) Well, I guess
she's not so bad.
Later...
- Woman: I swear, you like that cat more than you like me.
- Man: You know that's not true. I can't help it if she follows me
around all the time.
The final stages...
- Man: Honey, have you seen my cat anywhere?
- Woman: What do you mean, your cat?

Free Search Engine Software Packages
- Alkaline Search
Free for non-commercial sites and individuals; fee-based for
commercial use. For multiple platforms, including Windows NT, Linux,
Sun Solaris, IRIX, FreeBSD and BSD.
- Cha Cha
This is experimental software that displays matches in relation to
their location in a web site. You're shown all the pages "above" a
particular page, which is meant to provide more context. The page
itself can then be displayed in the right-hand frame.
- Excite For Web Servers (EWS)
Excite's software can be installed in minutes, even by novice users.
It allows both keyword and concept searching, search grouping by
subject, and it automatically generates abstract summaries. A
technical support and product update service can be purchased.
- Extense
Search software for Linux, Sun Solaris and AIX. Free to use, if
indexing 200 or fewer pages.
- ht://DIG
Unlike some free packages, ht://Dig can index documents stored on more
than one web server. It also provides customized results using HTML
templates, Boolean searching, Fuzzy searching and other features. It
runs on several Unix platforms, but you'll need to compile it. Both a
C and C++ compiler are required.

More software packages
- Isearch
A customizable package from the Center for Networked Information
Discovery and Retrieval. It handles a wide-range of document types.
The Isearch Resources page has even more details about it.
- Lycos Site Spider
Search software from Lycos and Inmagic (see below) for Windows NT.
- PLS
PLS has provided information retrieval tools since 1983 to major
companies. Now owned by AOL, PLS offers its software for free.
- SWISH-E (SWISH Enhanced)
An enhanced version of the popular SWISH search engine software. A key
feature is that searches can be limited to within certain HTML tags,
such as meta, title and comments tags. It supports Boolean operators
and wildcard searches.
- Thunderstone Webinator
The free version of Webinator is limited to 10,000 documents per
database, which is ample for many web sites. The commercial version,
removes this limitation. Both versions can also be used to make
custom meta search sites. Webinator is also available for installation
on Windows NT servers and various Unix platforms. It supports search
term highlighting in summaries, and it has a variety of ranking
controls. Technical support via a mailing list is said to be very
responsive.
- WebGlimpse
An enhanced version of the popular Glimpse search engine software,
which is no longer available. Among other things, it will gather
offsite pages linked from your site and add them to the site's index.
There is a license fee for commercial use.
