Lost Helicopter

A helicopter was flying around above Seattle when an electrical malfunction disabled all of the aircraft's electronic navigation and communications equipment. Due to the clouds and haze, the pilot could not determine the helicopter's position and course to steer to the airport.

The pilot saw a tall building, flew toward it, circled, drew a handwritten sign, and held it in the helicopter's window. The pilot's sign said "WHERE, AM?" in large letters.

People in the tall building quickly responded to the aircraft, drew a large sign, and held it in a building window. Their sign said "YOU ARE IN A HELICOPTER."

The pilot smiled, waved, looked at his map, determined the course to steer to SEATAC airport, and landed safely.

After they were on the ground, the copilot asked the pilot how the "YOU ARE IN A HELICOPTER" sign helped determine their position. The pilot responded "I knew that had to be the MICROSOFT building because they gave me a technically correct, but completely useless answer."

Effortlessly Promote Your Site With Free Advertising, by Patrick Stoddard

Classified Ads and Newsgroups

   Posting Classified Ads

Classified ads aren't always the most effective method, but you can use them to test your headlines and ad copy. The number of responses will indicate their effectiveness.

When it comes to classifieds, there are three guidelines to follow:

Post to the most relevant group

Post from an address you don't mind receiving unsolicited email from.

Make a note of when boards fill up and are refreshed.

Running a search from any search engine will provide numerous links for sites to post your free classified Ad.

   Posting to Newsgroups

Newsgroup Posting is Free, but do not Spam or it will cost you time and money and your service provider may disconnect your service.

The down side to Newsgroup Posting is that Your Advertisement Might Not Stand-Out, so it is critical that you post your ad using a number of different headlines.

Newsgroup Posting is a great way to test market an ad before paying for print advertising.

If you have never posted to a newsgroup, do not just start posting. Do a search for individuals marketing a similar product or service and read the information on appropriate newsgroup posting.

If you have posted to newsgroups, write two or three different ads and post them to appropriate newsgroups. When posting to a newsgroup, it is better to become part of an online discussion and use your signature file to promote your product or service.

Keep in mind that Newsgroup posting and respond may only represent a few percent of your website traffic.

Signature Files

A signature file is often the most overlooked form of promotion. It is a method of discretely advertising yourself and your website which is accepted across the Internet.

A signature file should be at most seven lines long and roughly 60 characters wide.

   For example:

   Sincerely,
   Cardinal Biggles
---------------------------------------------------------
Inquisition.com: Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!
Free conversion with every order of $500 or more.

Link Exchanges

Link Exchanges- Create a Network of Business and Work Together
to Promote Each Others Product and Service.

For some reason, many individuals believe that link exchanges will divert customers from their business. This might be the case if you are exchanging links with companies that market the same or similar product, but if I were selling sporting goods I would want to create a network of businesses that market products that appeal to my type of clients. For example, I would exchange links with travel sites and sites with outdoor recreation information.

Accomplishing link exchanges is easy. The best thing to do is put yourself in your potential customer's shoes. Ask yourself what other products or services they might purchase. Go to a search engine and pretend you're a customer. When you come across a business, send them an invitation to visit your website and suggest a link exchange.

We at the NetDummy Team would like to thank all our readers for reading NetDummy. The power of the Internet as a marketing tool lies in it's position as a free and low cost advertising solution. Do not expect to start receiving hits as soon as your site is on the Web. When it first goes live, the only people who know about it are you, your designer, and your site provider. Our next two issues will cover newsgroups and classifieds in more detail, so try to hang on until then.

If you feel there are any relevant topics not discussed in this article please feel free to bring it to our attention at:
