Editor's Note
Today's NetDummy is about Domain Names.
A domain-name is your own cyber-estate.
You can now pick nearly any word out of the dictionary, plug it
into a Domain Name System (DNS)lookup, and find out that it has
already been registered by someone else.
Domain names are the essence of your web page without one that is
easy to remember, anyone searching will have a difficult time finding
your site and will eventually give up and move to another.
We hope that you find this newsletter interesting and useful.

What's All the Hype About Domain Names by Patrick Stoddard
Why You Should Own One
Competitive Advantage:
If you own your company, you should carefully select your domain
name, as it represents both your storefront and your online address.
It should be a name that your customers can remember and use to
identify your brand.
Gold Rush Is On:
Investing in domain-names has been dubbed the gold rush of the
'90's. You surely don't want to miss it.
Money and Fun:
Why not make money while having fun? You can double your fun and
become your friends' envy by having a matching vanity license
plate number with a domain name.

What is a domain name?
Domain names are the familiar, easy to remember names for computers
on the Internet. They correspond to a series of numbers (called
Internet Protocol numbers) that serve as routing addresses on the
Internet.
A domain is part of a universal resource locator (URL, Web address)
Each domain name is associated with a unique Internet Protocol (IP)
address, which is a numeric address for a computer.
The Top-level domains:
.com For commercial entities, which anyone, anywhere in the world,
can register.
.net Originally designated for organizations directly involved
in Internet operations. It is increasingly being used by
businesses when the desired name under "com" is already
registered by another organization. Today anyone can register
a name in the .net domain.
.org For miscellaneous organizations, including non-profits.
.edu For four-year accredited institutions of higher learning.
.gov For US Federal Government entities
.mil For US military

Proposed Top-Level Domains
Companies and individuals have been waiting years for the
introduction of new top-level domains that could take some of the
pressure off .com.
Now the United States Department of Commerce’s National
Communication and Information Administration (NTIA) and the
Internet Corp. for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) have joint
custody of all new top-level domains. These organizations have been
in control since 1998, and there are still no indications that any
new top-level domains will become available before 2001.

Registering Your Domain Name
Step #1:
Search For A Domain Name feature to see if the domain name you want
is already in use.
Watch the on-screen report to see if the name has already been taken
by another and repeat Step #1 until you find a name that’s available.
Once you settle on a name, you will have to decide on a payment
option.
Step #2:
The traditional method costs $35 a year, which is $70 for the first
two years, and it requires you to have technical information from
your ISP available. Many ISP’s will register your domain name for
you, so you may want to stop after you find a name in Step 1 and
request that your ISP complete the process.
If you work through an ISP, enter your preferred domain name through
a search screen. You will also have to enter contact information for
your organization, and the ISP will add its technical information
and submit the request for you.

Profiteering
Many people have registered domain names hoping to sell them at a
higher price, and they are greatly contributing to the shortage.
There are approximately 30,000 domain names registered every month.
This type of investment (or gambling) is generically dubbed
cybersquatting.
Fortunately Congress passed legislation in November 1999 that
makes certain types of cybersquatting illegal.
The new legislation, passed as a last-minute rider on a larger
budget bill, makes it a crime to register a trade name or celebrity
name with the intent of selling it for profit.
